APHA Committee on Women's Rights Business Meeting
In 1971, the Committee on Women’s Rights (COWR) was created by the APHA Governing Council as a Standing Committee, which means that COWR is part of the APHA Constitution Article XIII, Section 1. COWR membership is by appointment and includes at least one male member. COWR was initially established to ensure equal representation by women in leadership positions within APHA. Current efforts continue in this spirit, but the mission of COWR has evolved over time to meet the changing circumstances of society and contexts of women’s lives domestically and internationally. COWR's mission is to relate “the concerns of the entire APHA membership and all its organizational components to the problems associated with women in society which involve considerations of health, health services, and health career opportunity." COWR also places emphasis on other issues, such as economic and pay equity, expanding the scope of women's health beyond reproductive health, and viewing women’s health and rights through contextualized experiences of women, considering the intersection of cultural, social, political, economic, cultural, spiritual, sexual, and environmental forces. In the past few years, COWR has co-sponsored policies related to women’s health, initiated a ban on exhibitors with missions in direct conflict with APHA positions, and organized popular oral and poster sessions at the Annual Meeting.
