Strengthening Public Health Systems: the Role of NGOs and International Institutions
In many countries, public health care systems are characterized by a severe shortage of health care workers, limited supplies, and growing health care needs among the population. In recent years, there has been a major increase in resources available for addressing global disease and the needs of health ministries. International non-governmental organizations and international financial institutions are involved in shaping health policy and service delivery; as such, it is important to consider their roles in the attempt to strengthen public health systems. This session will begin with an analysis by ActionAid International about the role of the International Monetary Fund in determining the quantity of financial resources that are available for national health budgets in developing countries. The next two presenters will share their experiences of working within NGOs in coordination with Ministries of Health to improve health care service delivery. The session will conclude with a presentation calling for an NGO code of conduct to support health systems strengthening.
