| With rates of obesity in America continuing to rise, diet and physical activity continue to be the focus of many health education interventions. This session will include information on the scientific evidence for effective psycho-behavioral interventions to curb the epidemic of obesity among US minority adults, and a screening protocol within a community-owned grocery store for modifiable cardiovascular risks, including obesity. The dietary implications of food choices endorsed on TV and the effectiveness of healthy choice vending intervention as component of a broader environmental behavior change program addressing obesity will also be presented. Because an individual’s diet may produce other outcomes, a systematic review of studies designed to increase awareness of, knowledge about and consumption of folic acid supplements before and during pregnancy will also be covered. | ||||
| Learning Objectives: At the end of the session, the participant will be able to: (1) Recognize psycho-behavioral intervention components that are more effective in reducing body weight or body mass index among minority adults; (2) List at least four characteristics of efficacious interventions in reducing body weight among minority adults; (3) Discuss a new project that combines nutritional and physical activity education and promotion with food environment research; (4) Articulate the components of a healthy choice vending intervention. | ||||
