Social and Cultural Issues Surrounding HIV/AIDS Status, Disclosure and Transmission
The focus of the posters in this session is enhancing our understanding of the social and cultural issues surrounding HIV/AIDS status, disclosing one’s status to others, and perinatal transmission of HIV and related concerns. Several of the posters examine the impact of HIV/AIDS status within the family context, while other posters describe the challenges and barriers to disclosing one’s status in diverse situations. Another key theme is how to reduce perinatal HIV transmission and improving the health and well-being of pregnant women. Other topics include (1) issues surrounding gender, incarceration, knowledge, and HIV transmission; (2) possible political consequences associated with disclosure, and (3) enhancing quality of life among HIV+ persons.
Learning Objectives: 1. Evaluate the efficacy of different strategies designed to reduce perinatal transmission of HIV. 2. Describe the social and cultural issues that surround HIV disclosure. 3. Recognize the disparities present regarding HIV testing and disclosure among vulnerable segments of the population.
