HIV Treatment and Prevention Issues for Diverse Communities
The overall emphasis of posters in this session is HIV treatment and prevention issues in diverse communities. It is important to focus on treatment and prevention issues among different segments of the population because treatments need to be tailored according to the audience being targeted by the specific treatment. Posters in this session discuss HIV treatment and prevention considerations for diverse groups, such as substance users, adolescents, men who recruit new partners from the internet, drug offenders who are returning to the community, and persons residing outside of the US (e.g., Vietnamese persons; persons residing in the Carribean). In addition, some of the posters examine personality traits, including sexual compulsivity, as they relate to engaging in unhealthy behaviors such as alcohol abuse and unsafe sexual practices. Some of the posters focus on treatment and related issues. For instance, one study examines how much nurses know about alternative medicine treatments. Last, some of the posters address unique factors faced by injection drug users themselves and by persons involved with their care.
Learning Objectives: 1. Articulate the HIV prevention needs of diverse groups, such as substance users, adolescents, men who recruit new partners from the internet, drug offenders who are returning to the community, and persons residing outside of the US (e.g., Vietnamese persons). 2. Describe personality traits as they relate to HIV risk behaviors. 3. Discuss unique factors faced by injection drug users themselves and by persons involved with their care.
