Oral health has been included in Healthy People, the Nation’s disease prevention and health promotion plan, since its inception in 1979. Over the decades the Healthy People overarching goals and objectives, including the oral health objectives, are updated and revised to reflect the most current science and knowledge. The purpose of this session is to provide an update on: the Healthy People 2010 Midcourse Review assessment of progress on the oral health objectives; barriers to achieving the oral health targets; plans for the Final Review; and the process for developing the next iteration of national objectives for the year 2020.
Session Objectives: Participants will be able to: 1. Describe the history and purpose of the Healthy People initiative and its evolution 2. Discuss which Healthy People 2010 oral health objectives moved toward their targets at midcourse review and which ones moved away from their targets. 3. Describe the process that will be used to develop the Healthy People 2020 objectives.
