Borders define limits and boundaries of nations, states, and institutions; today, our global community is a place where people, information, and ideas cross borders with increasing ease, but may clash with the systems and infrastructures created to define political or governing units or to protect people, information, and ideas from exploitation. The Genomics Forum invites abstracts for presentations and posters related to the 2008 conference theme, "Public Health Without Borders,” and to areas of special interest to public health practitioners and researchers interested in the field of genomics. We are especially interested in studies that may inform future research and/or describe the impact of existing genomics policies and practice on public health. Abstracts on various aspects of the ethical, legal, and social issues of genomics are also encouraged. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Community engagement in genomics and public health
- Education (e.g. Public health professional competency, public awareness, genetic literacy, etc.)
- Ethics of genetic research and services (e.g. Genome Wide Association studies, data use, informed consent, direct-to-consumer marketing, genome testing, etc.)
- Genetic epidemiology (Disease susceptibility, gene-environment interactions, family history, etc.)
- Genetics and Health Disparities
- Health impact of genetics policy
- Public Health Genomics without Borders (e.g. International issues in genetics, innovative systems for collaboration across international, state, or institutional borders, patents and intellectual property, etc.)
- Uses of genetic and genomic interventions in public health settings (e.g. Population-based screening, translational research, use of genetic information, etc.)
Abstracts should be 250 words or less and can not refer to web pages or URLs. For any and all inquiries, always refer to the abstract by your abstract number as assigned to you online. The Genomics Forum encourages students and those who have never presented at an APHA annual meeting, especially community-based organizations to submit abstracts. Be sure to indicate new presenter or student status, and/or whether you would like to be considered for the first annual Genomics and Public Health Award when submitting your abstract. All abstracts will be reviewed based on relevance of the abstract to the conference and genomics forum, noteworthiness of problem, theoretical framework, and quality of research design, methods, and interpretation.
