Abstract #188713

Translating personal to political; local to federal policy (Voices Conference)

Jeffrey Caballero, MPH, Association of Asian Pacific Community Health Organizations, 300 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, Suite 620, Oakland, CA 94612, 510-272-9536, jeffc@aapcho.org

A national multi-issue membership and policy advocacy organization will participate in a panel to share concrete examples of how personal health issues in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander community translate to policy and advocacy efforts on the local, state and federal levels. The panelist will also discuss any timely hot policy topics.

This panelist will present how the national hepatitis B taskforce agenda developed at the 2006 APIAHF Voices Conference has been translated to a national advocacy & action agenda. The presentation begins with a description of the status and challenges related to hepatitis B advocacy. Then the speaker will present the efforts to increase federal support, secure consensus amongst national and grassroots advocates/stakeholders, and develop grassroots/legislative support.
