Goals

This presentation addresses Latina women's understanding of physical activity in relation to their overall health. Research questions addressed the use of physical activity for weight control in the context of Latinas' lives.

Methods

Six focus groups of Latinas were conducted, two consisting of physically active women and four of non-physically active ones. A multi-method data collection system was designed based on group discussion guidelines and individual instruments (e.g., sociodemographic profiles)

Results

Both physically active and non-physically active samples underscored the importance of regular physical activity for keeping an optimal weight. Latina women in both samples also recognized barriers to engaging in regular physical activity. However, the physically active women expressed belief in the holistic effects of physical activity, which strengthened their ability to find social and individual resources to overcome barriers. In addition, active participants mentioned proactive strategies for integrating physical activity into their daily routines, such as walking rather than using transportation, and engaging in diverse forms of routine exercise to avoid boredom.

Conclusions

Effective intervention approaches should consider the beneficial effects of physical activity in maintaining overall physical and mental health. Creative forms of physical activity, such as dancing and walking with peers and taking the stairs instead of the elevator, should be promoted among Latinas.

Learning Objectives:
• List five barriers to physical activity experienced by Latina immigrants. • Describe three strategies used by Latina immigrants to overcome barriers to physical activity. • Examine the advantages of physical activity on Latina women’s overall health. • Promote the connection between exercise, diet, and energy level.
