In 2005, the Family Health and Birth Center in Washington DC began utilizing the uniform data set of the American Association of Birth Centers. The practice is a private non-profit established to serve marginalized African American families in the poorest neighborhoods of the nation's capitol. The service model has provided families the choice of continuity midwifery care at the site of client's choosing: freestanding birth center or hospital center. The following analysis presents the effects of delivery site, controlling for provider continuity, pre-existent medical risk factors. Implications for clients, providers and policy makers will be explored.

Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to articulate how the comparison groups (birth center vs. hospital) are uniform in relation to pre-existing medical risk factors and socioeconomic risk profiles. 2. Participants will be able to site three reasons why site of birth effects birth outcomes positively or negatively. 3. Participants will articulate the importance of understanding controling for provider group influences study design.
