Participants will learn why trauma constitutes a public health crisis in our country, particularly among people who utilize human services systems. Discussion points include trauma prevalence and mental health/physical health/social implications, as well as legacy and intergeneration effects, for individuals, families, and communities. Participants will discuss contextual factors of culture and its impact on how trauma is experienced, addressed and incorporated in the recovery/healing process. The presentation will review the core tenets and principles of trauma-informed care and why trauma informed approaches are necessary to service delivery, systems change, and public health.

Learning Objectives:
Demonstrate understanding of the prevalence of trauma and its effect on health, mental health, and social implications for individuals and for communities. Recognize the signs and symptoms of traumatic experiences and, through the lens of the trauma survivor, recognize its deep and lasting effects on well-being. Describe health disparities as they relate to the effects of culture on how trauma is experienced, interpreted and incorporated into the recovery process. Identify core principles of a trauma-informed approach to health care Distinguish trauma-specific interventions from trauma-informed approaches. Explain how trauma informed care can reduce instances of re-traumatization for service recipients.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: My lived experience reflects my expertise in the subject of trauma. I have numerous years of working the the public mental health system as an advocate, system developer and policy maker. Currently my duties invovle the management of the CMHS National Center for Trauma Informed Care, and other duties related to mental heatlh tranformation. I am also the author of several documents that foster recovery and resiliecne for mental health issues.
