Latin American Social Medicine (LASM) has emerged as a field whose contributions challenge our understanding of the social determinants of the health-ill-healthcare process. This challenge reflects a paradigm shift that was initiated by a critique of public health and the “encounter” of academia with political and social movements. LASM's analysis of the social origins of disease and premature death has questioned the relations of economic and political power with our societies. LASM's research program and methods have shown relevance to understanding the medical and public health problems of countries beyond Latin America. LASM can provide concepts, methods, research findings, and innovative practices applicable to the current U.S. debate on health inequities.
