3358.0 GLBT Youth : Meeting the Health Needs of All Students

This session will be devoted to research examining the particular health needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth. Presentations will include results of an exploratory study conducted among an ethnically diverse cohort of 526 young men who have sex with men (YMSM) to investigate how and where they received information on sexual health and behavior; findings of an investigation done to examine the relations of sex behavior, partner gender and reproductive health care of sexual minority youth showing that while both female and male adolescents with partners of both genders reported increased sexual risk-taking behaviors and pregnancy, only females were more likely to receive reproductive health care compared to males; a summary of the secondary analysis of the National College Health Assessment (N=> 94,000) undertaken to investigate the relations of sexual identity to the smoking, drinking and drug use behaviors of sexual minority college students; and an examination of “Abstinence-Only Until Marriage” programs and their impact on the Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth (LGBTQ) communities.
Session Objectives: Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to (1) Describe the results of an exploratory study done to assess how a cohort of ethnically diverse young men who have sex with men (YMSM) obtain information on sexual health and behavior; (2) Discuss the findings of a study undertaken to assess the relations of sexual minorities to sexual risk taking, gender of partners, and utilization of reproductive health care; (3) Articulate the results of a secondary analysis of the National College Health Assessment done to investigate the relations of sexual identity to the smoking, drinking and drug use behaviors of sexual minority college students; and (4) Describe the impact of “Abstinence-Only Until Marriage “curricula on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth.
