Submit Abstract

The Food and Nutrition Section invites you to submit abstracts for the APHA 137th Annual Meeting, Water and Public Health, to be held November 7 – 11, 2009 in Philadelphia, PA. Water is an essential nutrient that serves a critical role in every function of the body. Having a clean, safe, and ample water supply is paramount to our health and wellbeing. How decisions are made regarding water shortages and access, the increasing demand for food production, water pollutants, and water fortification will significantly impact the nutritional health of our nation and beyond in the 21st century. As a result, evidenced-based practice, research, and policy-related abstracts that highlight water and nutritional health, as well as public health nutrition, food safety and security, innovations in nutrition policy and education, and physical activity are encouraged.

Student abstracts are highly encouraged and an award will be presented for the student abstract receiving the highest score from reviewers. Additionally, the Food & Nutrition Section seeks innovative technology-based abstracts (interactive phone, internet, mass media, film and theater) that can be presented in the Film and Technology Theater.

Note that the online deadline for abstract submission has been extended! Abstracts are due by February 19, 2009. Different dates apply for special or invited sessions. See below for details.

Due to the high quality and volume of abstracts submitted to the Food and Nutrition Section, abstracts must include the following elements: 1) introduction or background; 2) program design/methodology that entails scientific research (for both quantitative or qualitative research); 3) program evaluation results or expected results; and, 4) discussion, to include importance or significance of the work.

Within the categories of water and nutritional health, public health nutrition, food safety and security, innovations in nutrition policy and education, and physical activity, the Food and Nutrition Section identified specific topics of abstracts that will be considered for the 137th APHA Conference. Each abstract topic may focus on policy, regulation, and statute; surveillance and epidemiological findings; behavioral and attitudinal research; social marketing, educational interventions, and program research; and new technologies.

We are hopeful that solicitation of these abstracts will help us gain understanding and promote resolution to the food, water, and nutrition public health challenges we face domestically and internationally.
