This presentation describes the roles that young people played in learning about their local food environments, assessing food and nutritional needs, considering food environments as a social determinant of health and planning action campaigns to change unhealthy food environments. The session will identify the strategies used to engage young people, the obstacles encountered and the observed youth outcomes for the NYC Health Equity Project. Lessons for youth organizations that want to engage young people in changing local food environments will be presented.

Learning Objectives:
Identify one strategy used to engage young people in changing local food environments. Describe the strengths of using CBPR to encourage young people to participate in health action. Discuss the limitations of using CBPR to engage young people in health action.
