5104.0 Asthma epidemiology

Wednesday, November 10, 2010: 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Oral
This interesting session will focus on various issues related to the epidemiology of asthma. Presentations will include risk of acute chest syndrome in pediatric sickle cell asthmatic population, acute exacerbations of asthma associated with “vog” exposure, state geographical variation in asthma prevalence, and asthma management in the uninsured patient population. Another presentation will discuss the analysis of spirometry benefits in children with asthma via propensity score matching.
Session Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the learner (participant) will be able to: 1) Discuss the importance of asthma education in the prevention and management of pulmonary complications among pediatric patients with sickle cell disease; 2) Identify asthma health effects associated with exposure to volcanic air pollution; and 3) Describe relationships between private, public, or no health insurance coverage and asthma management behaviors and outcomes
