CALL FOR ABSTRACTS — 139th APHA Annual Meeting (October 29 - November 2, 2011)

Theme: Healthy Communities Promote Healthy Minds & Bodies

Peace Caucus

Submission Deadline: Tuesday, February 8, 2011

The Peace Caucus invites abstracts on a broad range of topics relating to peace and social justice, health and human rights. One focus of this year’s program will be to continue to advance APHA’s 2009 policy “The Role of Public Health Practitioners, Academics, and Advocates in Relation to Armed Conflict and War”. Themes related to the policy include training, curricula and competencies among health workers in relation to war and conflict; building international partnerships; and encouraging broader research, data collection, synthesis and dissemination of information on the public health impacts of war.

We are also soliciting papers that will resonate with this year’s conference theme “Healthy Communities Promote Healthy Minds and Bodies”. Communities immersed in war and conflict are not healthy communities. Abstracts are sought that speak to community health effects of war and cultures of violence throughout the world, particularly in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East. Other topics of interest are ethical questions confronting healthcare providers in the military, including, but not limited to, participation in torture; the environmental health impacts of militarism, ie. military toxins and the military contribution to climate change; the relationship between nuclear power and nuclear weapons; and the physical and mental health effects of war on military personnel, their families and their communities.

We encourage co-sponsorship and participation in planning of these sessions by other sections, SPIGs, and caucuses, as well as by new professionals and students.

We are seeking oral presentations and films to be included in the convention film festival. We are not allocated any poster session time slots. Broad categories of potential sessions include:
  • Advancing APHA’s 2009 Policy “The Role of Public Health Practitioners, Academics, and Advocates in Relation to Armed Conflict and War”
  • Communities at War are Unhealthy Communities
  • Medical Ethics and the Military
  • War, Terrorism and Public Health
However, sessions will be developed from the submissions, so do not be constrained by these titles. Questions? We welcome phone calls prior to abstract deadline to answer your questions, discuss your ideas and suggestions, and help you submit an abstract.
