This presentation will provide an overview of the values, strategic directions, technical content and process of the development of the new European policy for health – Health 2020. This is a two year process that will be completed in September 2012, when Health 2020 will be submitted to the 53 Member States of the European Region of WHO for adoption. Health 2020 is underpinned by the human value of the right to health, a coherent integrated framework of strategies and interventions that work and a whole of government and whole of society approach to health and wellbeing. The presentation will also provide an overview of the evidence base for Health 2020, including the European Review of the Social Determinants and the Health Divide, the study on Governance for Health in the 21st Century and the study on the Economics of Prevention.
