Since 1992, the Center for Digital Storytelling (www.storycenter.org) has been a global innovator and leader in the development of community-based participatory media production. We work with partners from around the world to lead intimate workshops in which individuals share meaningful moments from their lives in the form of short digital videos called, “digital stories.” This session will feature a screening of a collection of stories created as part of public health projects designed to bring personal narratives into local efforts to address health, well-being, and prevention within Canadian First Nations, Arizona-based Asian Pacific Islander, and North Eastern African American communities

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I am a digital storytelling instructor, documentary filmmaker, and public health/community development consultant. After spending twelve years coordinating women’s health and violence prevention projects throughout California, I founded Silence Speaks, an international digital storytelling initiative that blends oral history, participatory mediamaking, and popular education in workshops to support the telling and public sharing of life stories that document injustice and promote gender equality, women’s health, and human rights.
