Jonathan Fielding, MD, MPH, MA, MBA , Department of Public Health, Los Angeles County, Los Angeles, CA
The Guide to Community Preventive Services (Community Guide) conducts systematic reviews that analyze all available scientific evidence on what works to improve and protect health. Policymakers, practitioners, and other public health decision makers in a wide range of community settings use the Community Guide's evidence-based findings and recommendations to make informed decisions about allocating their scarce resources to effective programs, services and policies. Dr. Fielding will briefly discuss the purpose and value of the Community Guide and its relationship to other initiatives such as Healthy People 2020 and the National Prevention Council, and it will provide an update on the range of existing Community Guide recommendations.

Dr. Fielding will also describe how Los Angeles County Health Department utilizes the Community Guide to develop and implement its public health activities. This will include discussion of how the Health Department has institutionalized the Community Guide through using the Guide's evidence-based recommendations about effective programs, policies, and services as the basis for establishing and strengthening accountability and performance measures critical for achieving important public health goals.
