Partnership: This unique competency-based training curriculum is grounded in recent research conducted by Jim Emery, MPH and Carolyn Crump, PhD of the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health under contract with the Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE).
Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview: The purpose of this institute is to introduce participants to the policy change process, including how local or state coalition might influence both policy development and implementation. Through interactive exercises, lecture, and group discussion, participants become familiar with concepts and how they might help influence policy. The workshop introduces five topics: 1) defining social/health problems; 2) policy analysis to identify solutions; 3) advocacy to influence the policy process; 4) bureaucratic implementation of an enacted policy; and 5) evaluation of policy change.
Session Objectives: By the end of the session, participants will be able to: Describe key components of a problem definition Describe how to use systems thinking to define a problem Discuss how to frame (and reframe) a problem to your advantage Describe how to structure a written problem/issue brief
