This session describes factors associated with mental health service use and public perceptions of mental health service use needs. It describes barriers to treatment seeking, and associations with unstable housing. It also describes how the public’s perception of mental health needs has been changing over time.
Session Objectives: Identify the barriers on the way to substance abuse treatment seeking for individuals with substance disorders in the community. Discuss the impact of co-occurring behavioral health disorders on the utilization of acute care for mental health and/or substance abuse needs. Describe the impact of unstable housing on hospital readmissions of mentally ill patients. Describe changes in how the U.S. public responds to a subclinical case presenting mental health problems. Then assess the potential manifest and latent consequences of current program policy efforts on the public mental health system.
