CALL FOR ABSTRACTS — 140th APHA Annual Meeting

Theme: Prevention and Wellness Across the Lifespan

Asian Pacific Islander Caucus for Public Health

Submission Deadline: Tuesday, February 14, 2012

The Asian Pacific Islander Caucus for Public Health (APIC), in official relations with the American Public Health Association (APHA), invites abstracts for the 140th APHA Annual Meeting and Exposition on October 27-31, 2012, taking place in San Francisco, CA. We encourage submissions that focus on the annual meeting’s theme, "Prevention and Wellness Across the Lifespan", as it applies to Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in the United States and associated territories.  Abstract submissions from or with community-based partners are also highly encouraged.

Student primary-authored submissions are given special consideration. These abstracts should be noted on the application in order to be identified as eligible for APIC’s Best Student Abstract Award. The first student author of the highest scoring student abstract will be recognized with an award at the APIC reception at the annual meeting.

Structured abstracts with a 250-word maximum are preferred. All research abstracts should be submitted with the following five sections:

  1. background/ significance
  2. objective/purpose
  3. methods
  4. results
  5. discussion/conclusions

Please do not include references or citations in the text of the abstract. In addition, please do not include brand or trade names in the title and/or text of the abstract; generic names are required for continuing education credit. All abstracts must be submitted with at least two learning objectives in the proper APHA format (i.e., “By the end of the session, the participant will be able to...”).

Please check the abstract title and text for spelling and grammatical errors. Do not include your name or contact information in the text portion as this prohibits blind peer review. Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in rejection of your submission.

Peer review of abstracts is blinded. Abstracts will be peer-reviewed based on the following criteria:

  • Importance - Importance to Asian and/or Pacific Islander health
  • Relevance - Relevance to APIC topics
  • Originality - Innovative information/cutting edge/topic not addressed elsewhere
  • Quality - Completeness in describing research/project/concept/supporting data of the program/project/intervention/research
  • Clarity - Clearly written and conveys the essence of the program/project/intervention/research
  • Annual Meeting Theme – In alignment with the annual meeting’s theme, “Prevention and Wellness Across the Lifespan”

Please indicate whether you prefer oral or poster format for your presentation. APHA has general guidelines for each format option. There are limited slots available for oral presentations, so please give the Program Committee as many options as possible.

Although we will consider ALL submissions, we particularly encourage work that focuses on the following topics:

Submitters do not have to be members of APHA or APIC. However, authors of accepted abstracts *must* register for the APHA Annual Meeting and become an individual member of APHA and APIC in order to present at the meeting. Thus, individuals should submit an abstract only if they are committed to making the presentations themselves or have a substitute willing to register, attend the meeting, and deliver the presentation.

Invitations to present will be withdrawn should authors of awarded abstracts be unable to present at the Annual Meeting.

Those interested in Asian and/or Pacific Islander health are invited to join APIC. Further details on the Caucus can be found at http://www.apicaucus.org. For more information about the 140th APHA Annual Meeting and Exposition, please visit http://www.apha.org/meetings/AnnualMeeting/.
