Background: This study examines the drinking patters and quantities consumed among older patrons who regularly consume alcohol at on-site premises. Considering that this population will increase from 12% to 19% of the US population by 2030, are more likely to be sufferers of stroke and cardiovascular disorders, and moderate alcohol consumption is a protective factor, on-site premises are one locale where this potentially healthy behavior can be practiced. Methodology: Observers noted patrons at 3 different on-site premises over a 6 month period (July 2011 through Dec 2011) from 6-8 pm twice for each weekday evening. Patrons drinking patterns and quantities of alcohol consumed were observed and recorded. Results: The routine drinking patterns of patrons (80% male) who frequented on-site premises tended to fall within three types. First, a patron will only consume alcohol at one establishment. Second, a patron will “hop” from on establishment to another on the same night. Third, a patron will frequent different establishments on different nights. Alcohol consumption by patrons normally was 2 drinks. Rarely, did a regular patron vary their drinking pattern or the amount of alcohol consumed each night. Secondly, older patrons consumed far less alcoholic beverages than younger patrons in the same time span. Conclusions: Older patrons who regularly frequent on-site premises consume alcohol in a responsible manner consistent with moderate alcohol consumption and associated health benefits. Differing drinking patterns differ among patrons which has implications for educational interventions.
