The purpose of this panelist's presentation is to describe approaches and tools undertaken in the Commonwealth of Virginia to estimate Return on Investment (ROI) for public health programs and activities. ROI is particularly relevant to the field as public health departments and organizations must do more with less in an era of shrinking budgets and increased need. The panelist will discuss efforts in this area undertaken through National Public Health Improvement Initiative (NPHII). He will provide valuable information on the successful conceptualization and planning of ROI approaches and tools, as well as practical insights on facilitating factors, challenges, and lessons learned through implementation. He will offer unique "on-the-ground" insights on the use of these approaches and tools from a performance management perspective.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I am the Performance Improvement Manager for the Virginia Department of Health and have implemented several performance improvement projects that have yielded in excess of $1 million dollars in savings or new revenue. Equally, we have implemented several PI projects that have had significant ROI, in terms of time saved and steps reduced in critical processes. Prior to VDH, I also had significant experience leading teams at UnitedHealth and UNOS in projects to maximize ROI.
