Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, learners will understand some aspects of the scope and direction of formal medical education worldwide today, and based on the results of the recent WHO survey have a better appreciation of both the current status of the world's medical schools and recommended future directions for a re-orientation of their teaching and research programs to better serve the health of the public.

Abstract Text: The World Health Organization has recently completed a 250 question survey of all of the world's medical schools. This survey, primarily directed towards a better understanding of the current social accountability of medical schools in regards to the health needs of both individuals and communities, contains information on the organizational structures, faculty, students, curricula, research programs, assessment protocols, facilities, financial resources, continuing education programs, interactions with the community and current evaluation methods. Data from the report allows a comparison of the teaching and research programs and other aspects of medical schools both between countries and between WHO regions. Based on the survey and other information, the report provides recommendations for directions for world medical education. The session will explore the potential future role of the world's medical schools in global health, health system reform and human resource planning.
