In 1993 The Colorado Trust, a private grantmaking foundation in Colorado, entered into a partnership with Kempe Prevention Research Center for Family and Child Health to rigorously test a nurse home visitation model for low-income, first time mothers in Denver. The randomized trial studied effectiveness of nurse home visitors and high school graduate paraprofessionals. The positive effects of this nurse home visitation model have been well documented in the literature. Recognizing the importance of bringing this model to scale, The Colorado Trust embarked on specific strategies that have resulted in a recent decision by the Colorado state legislature to earmark public funds for this purpose. This presentation will describe the journey from a controlled study involving approximately 500 mothers to a state-wide effort with the potential to impact tens of thousands of families. Specific successes and challenges for replication of this effort will be addressed.

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1) Describe the components necessary to bring state-of-the-science research to scale in Colorado. 2) Discuss the strategy used to engage policy makers and ultimately impact policy around home visitation.

Learning Objectives: 1) Articulate the components necessary to bring state-of-the-science research to scale in Colorado. 2) Discuss the strategy used to engage policy makers and ultimately impact policy around home visitation.
