The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry’s Division of Health Education and Promotion has developed two new environmental health resources for use by physicians and other health care providers: the Health Care Provider’s Pocket Guide to Environmental Health and Keys to Environmental Health for Parents.

The Health Care Provider’s Pocket Guide to Environmental Health is a “quick look” resource to help health care providers assess symptoms and conditions in which environmental conditions may be causal or contributing agents. The guide provides a concise model for considering environmental factors in an overall health appraisal. In addition, the guide gives specific suggestions about the kind of additional information that should be obtained to identify possible environmental links to the patient’s presenting symptoms. The guide also includes key resources through which health care providers can obtain more detailed expert guidance.

Keys to Environmental Health for Parents was produced to assist parents in protecting their children against environmental hazards that may impact their health. This tool is written in an easy-to-read format and is suitable for distribution by health care providers to parents, teachers, and others concerned with children’s health.

Both products are in handy, user-friendly formats. For example, the parent’s guide can be used as a refrigerator magnet to enhance its accessibility and usefulness.

Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will be able to identify at least three characteristics that must be present to consider an environmental exposure as the causative agent for a patient's symptoms. 2. Participants will be able to identify at least three resources or references through which environmental health expertise can be obtained. 3. Participants will learn one or more mechanisms through which they can impact environmental health-related conditions in their own communities.
