The Guide to Community Preventive Services: Systematic Reviews and Evidence-Based Recommendations (Guide) will cover health promotion and disease prevention interventions applied in community-based setting in 15 public health areas, including the Sociocultural Environment. A fundamental influence on health at the macro-level is the social environment. A multi-disciplinary content development team developed a conceptual approach to the Sociocultural Environment Chapter. This logic framework identifies determinants of health in the social environment and linkage points along the pathways from root determinants to intermediate outcomes to health outcomes, which may be amenable to community interventions. A priority setting process, which considered disparities in population health status, was used to select a set of community interventions, which are the subject of systematic reviews in the published literature. Interventions reviewed include: center-based early childhood development programs, mixed-income housing developments, and culturally competent health care systems. This work yields a body of evidence of intervention effectiveness and identifies where gaps in the intervention research exists. See www.thecommunityguide.org

Learning Objectives: 1. Describe a logic model which identifies determinants of health in the sociocultural environment 2. Discuss evidence-based reviews of three topics relevant to the social environment and community health: 1)early childhood development programs 2) mixed-income housing 3)culturally competent health care systems

Keywords: Evidence Based Practice, Community Assets
