An induced abortion is a risk factor for morbidity and mortality. The objective of this study is to examine the consequences of induced abortion with an emphasis on repeat abortion, health complications, and mortality. Two data sets -- Demographic Surveillance System (DSS) of the treatment and the comparison area and Abortion Dynamics Survey was conducted during January-December 1997 of the ICDDR,B: Center for Health and Population Research were used this study. Both bivariate and multivariate techniques were used for data analysis. The results showed that the proportion of repeat abortion has increased with a rise in the abortion ratio, and the increase differs by some of the women's characteristics and area. Marked improvement of contraceptive use has been observed among the women who had repeat abortions compared to the women who underwent an abortion for the first time. A women who has had an induced abortion once, is more prone to have subsequent abortions. The choice of abortion methods and abortion services by the women was found to be a major determinant of abortion-related complications. Induced abortion under certain conditions and circumstances could be fatal. Considering the health hazards of induced abortion, attention is needed by program mangers to provide effective use of contraceptive after abortion by educating women about the adverse consequences of seeking abortion frequently. Strengthening of maternal and child health and family planning services as well as by ensuring readily accessible modern abortion procedures, mortality/morbidity risk of induced abortion may be reduced.

Learning Objectives: Induced abortion under certain conditions and circumstances could be fata.
