The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is one of the eight agencies comprising the Public Health Service. NIH is comprised of 25 separate Institutes and Centers, including the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). With a budget of more than $17.8 billion, the NIH mission is to uncover new knowledge that will lead to better health for everyone. NIH works toward that mission by: ·conducting research in its own laboratories; ·supporting the research of non-Federal scientists in universities, medical schools, hospitals, and research institutions throughout the country and abroad; ·helping in the training of research investigators; and ·fostering communication of medical information. An overview of funding opportunities at the NIH as well as a discussion of the variety funding mechanisms available to support both research and training will be presented.
