Healthy Gente: A focus on health indicators for the U.S./Mexico border region in Luna County, New Mexico

Todd W. Wilson, MS, CHES1, Dawn Sanchez, MBA1, Elizabeth Burr2, and Suzanne D'Avalon2. (1) New Mexico Department of Health, 1170 N. Solano Drive, Suite K, Las Cruces, NM 88001, 505-528-5150, twilson@doh.state.nm.us, (2) Luna County Health Council, 700 S. Silver, Deming, NM 88031

METHODS: Using a community-driven process, Luna County Health Council members and residents are implementing Healthy Gente Health Indicators in their county. Staff from the Border Health Office and the New Mexico Department of Health in Las Cruces, NM are providing technical support and data translation for the community members as they select priority health indicators and establish an inventory of services currently in place to affect them. The first step was to collect data on 25 Healthy Gente Health Indicators, and use those data to inform the process of focus indicator selection. Next steps include maintaining a current inventory of health resources that are in place in Luna County, and working to allocate resources to priority indicators chosen by the Health Council and community members. RESULTS: Healthy Gente is an ongoing process that the Luna County Health Council has undertaken with two objectives: focusing on key health issues and improving the effective allocation of health resources. The creation of matrices that outline health resources currently in place, current health status for the 25 indicators, and population profiles have given Luna County the necessary tools to achieve the objectives above. CONCLUSIONS: The community-driven process of Healthy Gente Health Indicator implementation in Luna County is an ongoing project that is an effective example of collaboration between state, county and local public health staff and community members working to affect key health outcomes.
