In the last 10 years, the population of Latinos in New York City has shown a growing number of illegal immigrants. In stark contrast to Latinos who have been born in the US, or those who have been residing in the US for many years and/or are citizens, immigrant Latinos are unable to qualify for any governmental aid or healthcare. Migration, poverty, prejudice, illegal status, lack of access to healthcare, lack of supports, and the inability to speak English, are serious problems which immigrant Latinos face. These issues compound any mental health problems which arise in this population.
This presentation will include a brief review of the migration literature as well as statistics about the migration of legal and illegal Latinos into the US and particularly New York City. Preliminary data from the Latino Mental Health Program at Saint Vincent’s Catholic Medical Center in Manhattan will be used to compare both the specific mental health issues and the utilization of services by undocumented and legal Latinos. Clinical intervention and treatment recommendations will be discussed. At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to: (1) Describe the recent migration patterns of Latinos into the US; (2) Recognize the differences between documented and undocumented Latinos in terms of mental health issues and utilization of services; and (3) Improve treatment planning by considering the impact of migration.
