Problem

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are one of the health problems that face our adolescents today. It is estimated that 3.8 million new STD cases occur among U.S. teens each year. Adolescents from age 15 to 19 have the highest rates of chlamydia and gonorrhea cases. They are more likely to have multiple sexual partners rather than one long-term relationship, and unprotected sex. STDs place a tremendous health and economic burden on our society.

Description of Innovation

Students entering 8th to 12th grades should be provided STD education by establishing a community-based high school peer STD training program. A curriculum will be developed for students and delivered in 10 sessions. Sessions will consist of various topics of discussion concerning STDs, and incorporating healthy decision making. Some of the activities within these 10 sessions include videos, quest speakers, and role-playing.

Implications

The increasing prevalence of STDs among adolescents indicates that this population is in need of STD education and preventive methods to protect them from contracting such diseases by providing alternative measures. Advocating for certain lifestyle choices, promoting the development of appropriate coping skills and social support systems is very much needed.

Recommendation

There should be an ongoing collaborative effort between the STD Program and school officials to address the issues concerning high risk sexual behaviors of adolescents, and the consequences that results from such behaviors. Plans to implement a peer STD training program within the high schools should also be looked into.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. Identify ways of preventing STDs in adolescents 2. List advantages of having a STD peer training program.
