Developing, Implementing, Continuing and Evaluating an Effective Peer Leadership Program in a Multi-cultural Urban School Setting

Programmatic Objective: To develop peer leaders to work in their communities in HIV prevention. To increase knowledge, enhance personal and social competency skills in relation to HIV/AIDS. To educate and empower fellow peers in reducing high risk behaviors and encourage more healthy behavior choices. Programmatic Setting: Implemented in multi-cultural urban school settings. Programmatic Intervention: Peer leaders are recruited and must complete training in AIDS 104, abstinence, sexual negotiation, delaying and refusal skills and community service work. Programmatic Outcomes: Achievements have been highlited in local media and an official evaluation conducted by the Office of Evaluation and Research that concluded that the program " Continue... and consider expansion to other senior high schools." Programmatic Conclusion: Currently Miami-Dade County has 14 official peer leadership programs and more importantly with students crying out for independence and a way to impact their generation, these types of programs empowers them to take charge and set a positive stamp of approval for future generations to model. Learning Objectives: (1) To understand the necesity of student involvement. (2) To understand the requirements of peer leadership training. (3) To identify the need for community partnerships through memorandums of agreements.
