In partnership with the National Nursing Association of Kenya and the Nursing Council of Kenya, PRIME is conducting a study on the 3rd component of the postabortion care (PAC) model, "linkages with other reproductive health (RH) services," focusing on PAC at the primary level.

In the PAC literature, there is very little documented on this component of the model. Recommendations from other PAC-related studies highlight the need to better understand this component because the opportunity to offer other RH services should not be missed. This study seeks to answer questions such as: What other RH services should be offered or referred for, following FP counseling and services? What linkages should be made with HIV/STD services? What should primary providers be on the lookout for, so they can offer or refer for other RH services? Answers will contribute to state-of-the-art knowledge and understanding of what other RH services should be offered to postabortion women, and will contribute to the larger body of knowledge of the current PAC model.

PRIME will conduct an estimated 35 in-depth interviews with private nurse-midwives already providing PAC services in their primary care facilities, for the purposes of fully exploring each provider's experiences regarding their postabortion patients. Qualitative and quantitative data will be collected, using both structured and open-ended questions. Results are expected to lead to an expanded range of RH services offered to postabortion clients, an expansion of the PAC curriculum for primary providers, and improvements to the referral system for other RH services.

Learning Objectives: By the end of the session, participants will (1) identify other RH services which should/could be offered to postabortion women; (2) identify linkages which should/could be made between postabortion women and HIV/STD services; and (3) list what providers should be on the lookout for in postabortion clients so they can offer or refer for other RH services.
