The UIC School of Public Health Great Lakes Center will present the conference Health and Safety in the Global Economy: Past, Present and Future as our presention for Workers Memorial Day on April 21, 2001. The planning committee took its inspiration from the First Conference on Environmental and Occupational Safety and Health in the context of the Integration of the Americas held in Morelia, Mexico, August, 2000. The goals of the conference are to raise awareness about the impacts of globalization on health and safety, to analyze case studies called "the Good, the Bad and the Ugly" and to strategize for global solidarity. A popular education approach will be used to create a time line of events in the developing global economy with a facilitator. A panel of local organizers will describe how health and safety concerns are identified and how practical solidarity actions may be planned and implemented. Participants will analyze case studies and discuss criterion for analysis. Organizers include the Great Lakes Center, the Chicago Labor Education Program, the Chicago Federation of Labor and the Chicago Area Committee on Occupational Safety and Health.
