This paper presents findings from a qualitative study of the psychological and social context of HIV risk among MTF transgenders of color. Forty eight MTF transgenders (African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Latina) participated in ethnic-specific focus groups to discuss life issues surrounding HIV, drug use, and commercial sex. Several recurring themes which underlie HIV risk emerged across all focus group discussions. These themes include psychological and mental health issues, the role of social support networks and close relationships, gender identity issues, and inadequate community resources and services. Implications and recommendations for intervention and policy are presented based on the study findings.
