“Service with a smile”: The interplay between health, economics, & gender roles

This presentation discusses the principal differences between the Emotional Labor experience between women and men; specifically how Emotional Labor employment disproportionately impacts women in the service sector and influences their health. Further, the inter-connectedness between economic trends, gender roles, and health will be explored within the concept of Emotional Labor.

Learning Objectives: At the end of the session the participants will be able to: (1) Describe the economic costs/benefits of Emotional Labor for both employers & workers. (2) Describe the intersection of gender and Emotional Labor. (3) Illustrate the impact of Emotional Labor upon health from a gender perspective. (4) Consider how market & industry forces determine job availability and shape workplace hazards. (5) Recognize the importance of understanding the concept of Emotional Labor for public health purposes.
