Paul Meissner, MSPH, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, Montefiore Medical Center, 3544 Jerome Avenue, Bronx, NY 10467, 718-920-7802, pmeissne@montefiore.org

With the advent of health and other descriptive social and economic data in easily accessible electronic formats there has been a recent renaissance of indicators. This session will explore the use of indicators to measure health disparities, target interventions, and to serve as outcomes of interventions. Presentations will be made regarding the different levels of government and society using indicators, what they are using them for, how they are using them, how they are collecting the data, and the results they are finding from their use. This paper will present a brief history of the indicator movement and outline the presentations that will follow. Presentations will include: a) a review of activities at the national and regional level, b) a review of activities at the state and local level, c) further data needs and gaps, d) moving toward the future, as well as e) discussion time.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session the participant will: Understand the scope and breadth of recent activities in the development and use of indicators at the national, regional, state and local levels. Participate in a discussion of gaps in the collection and assembly of available data for use in indicators. Participate in a network of interested persons to further refine the development and use of indicators.
