Introduction: Substance abuse prevention programs often ignore important concepts such as self-esteem, autonomy, and positive decision-making that may critically affect substance abuse choices. Intervention must occur at an earlier age so the skills can be integrated into the students’ lives.

Methods: A class of approximately twenty students was followed from kindergarten through second grade. The students participated in one-hour sessions every Friday throughout each school year. Each year, the sessions were divided into four, eight-week modules. All modules used culturally sensitive material. The modules’ purpose was to provide the children with the skills and knowledge necessary to make positive substance abuse choices in later life. This program is planned to follow the children through third grade.

Results: In the first three years, significant changes were found in all areas. The Self-Esteem Inventory scores increased over time and in year three, as did the Children’s Apperception Test scores. Scores on the Adaptive Behavior Inventory for Children increased each year. Scores on the Health and Nutrition knowledge and attitude measure increased in years two and three. Finally, scores on the substance abuse knowledge and attitude measure increased in years one and three and over time.

Conclusions: All areas have shown significant improvements. We believe that participation in the final year of the program will lead to even greater self-esteem, autonomy, skilled decision-making, and knowledge. The DARE program will continue the substance abuse education in fourth grade.

Learning Objectives: Understand the substance abuse prevention program's innovative approach, recognize the program modules' significant impact on the children, and articulate the importance of an early education substance abuse prevention program
