Research conducted during the 1990’s points to a significant paradigm shift from targeting the individual to targeting their social network for HIV risk reduction. This presentation highlights data derived from 40 in-depth qualitative interviews with drug injectors that explore the various typologies of sexual risk dyads, i.e. couples (open, semi-open, closed, semi-closed relationships). Results suggest that HIV/AIDS interventions need to be aware of the context of risk in these various dyad typologies and target shared and/or individual HIV risk behaviors based on these typologies and relationships. After the presentation, attendees will demonstrate knowledge of various risk typologies and methods to effectively intervene in HIV risk behaviors among IDUs and others.

Learning Objectives: After the presentation, attendees will be able to demonstrate knowledge of various risk typologies and methods to effectively intervene in HIV risk behaviors among IDUs and others.
