The Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness Refugee Health Program, which is contracted through the Georgia Refugee Health Program, coordinate and facilitates health-screening services for all refugees resettled in Fulton County. Fulton is the second largest resettlement county in Georgia. The goal of the program is to work with resettlement agencies to ensure all refugees resettled in Fulton County are screened for communicable diseases and other health problems within 90 days of their arrival in the United States.
Many refugees and other displaced persons resettled in Fulton County have health problems not detected or manifested at the time of the mandatory overseas or port of U.S. entry screening exams. There are a large percentage of refugees with positive TB screens, parasitic infestations, oral and visual problems. Other problems affecting the quality of their general health are related to the circumstances of their displacement e.g. family separation, change in professional/social status, cultural losses and terrorism. Services provided through the county refugee health program are critical for the refugees healthy transition into his/her new environment as well as protecting the health of the community in which he/she lives.
