A needs assessment of transgendered people of color

Jessica Xavier, Gender Education and Advocacy, 2710 Emmet Road, Silver Spring, MD 20902, 202-797-3577, JXavier@wwc.org

The author presents findings from a community-based needs assessment survey which examines HIV and other health needs among transgenders of color, who are mostly African American or Latino, and who live in Washington DC. The study focuses on barriers and access to regular, transgender-related and HIV-related health care, HIV/STD risk behaviors, housing, employment, and crime and violence victimization. Preliminary and ongoing analysis of the data will allow the District of Columbia Health Department, community-based health care and social service organizations, and AIDS service organizations to specifically target and thus better allocate intervention services for transgendered people of color in need. Discussion will elaborate on the findings in relation to health care and public policy, and provide suggestions for other agencies who seek to conduct similar studies with this population.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1) Identify HIV needs and other health-related issues among MTF transgenders of color; 2) Conceptualize community-based strategies for addressing general health needs of this population; 3) Formulate plans to conduct community-based needs assessment studies for unique populations, such as MTF transgenders of color.
