Abstract #23482

A description of the National Tobacco Control Program Forum: An Internet-based tool for pro-active information sharing

Joel G. London, MPH, CHES and Nancy A. Williams, MSPH. Office on Smoking and Health, National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 4770 Buford Highway, NE, MS K-50, Rhodes Building, Atlanta, GA 30347, 770-488-5439, izL4@cdc.gov

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Office on Smoking and Health is promoting the use of an Internet-based information sharing mechanism rather than conventional e-mail to provide a forum for sharing tobacco related information among national, state, and local public health professionals. In contrast to current e-mail technologies, the National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP) Forum provides users with the ability to be pro-active in choosing the type of information resource they need at the time they need it.

The NTCP Forum promotes sharing experiences, challenges, expertise, strategies, lessons learned, and news information among Office on Smoking and Health staff, training contractors, state tobacco control officers and staff, and national partners. The presentation will report the types of public health professionals and partners that use the NTCP Forum, the types of tobacco related information shared among public health professionals and partners, and how this audience uses the information.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1) Describe a variety of public health professionals that use an Internet-based information forum. 2) Identify three catagories of information on an Internet-based information forum. 3) List three ways users of an Internet-based forum use shared information.
