Synergizing public and private health organizations through the workforce

In the 1988 publication, Future of Public Health,The Institue of Medicine discussed: Public Health as a Problem-Solving Activity: Barriers to Effective Action. In their assessment, barriers included lack of consensus on the public health mission; inadequate capacity to carry out essential functions, disjointed decision-making without necessary data and knowledge; limits on effective leadership such as rapid turnover of leaders and inadequate realtionships with the medical profession, etc. After 10 years, these barriers continue to manifest themselves in public health research and practice. Recognizing the public and private health workforce as the change agents for resolving these issues; bringing best practices and people from the public and private sector together, is vital in reducing and eliminating barriers to effective global action.
