Abstract #23850

Challenges and loopholes in gun tracing: Oakland case-study

Deane Calhoun, MA, Youth ALIVE!, 3300 Elm Street, Oakland, CA 94609, 510-594-2588, mail@youthalive.org

The presenter will discuss the findings and recommendations of the Oakland Gun Tracing Project, a research effort between local, state and federal agencies to trace the illegal supply of guns to juveniles in Oakland, CA. The overall goal of the project is to reduce the flow of guns to Oakland youth. Strategies of the project include identifying and describing sources of juvenile gun acquisitions, gaps in juvenile gun tracing systems at local, state, and federal levels, and recommendations for policy change to reduce juvenile gun violence in Oakland.

Since the commencement of the Oakland Gun Tracing Project in January 2000, the Gun Tracing Committee has collected information on the physical guns recovered in incidents of juvenile crime, as well as information on juveniles apprehended for and victimized by gun violence during 1998 and 1999. The Gun Tracing Committee is proposing local, state, and federal action to address the sources most responsible for illegally arming youth in Oakland.

The presenter will be representing Youth ALIVE!, a non-profit public health organization dedicated to preventing youth violence and the co-lead agency of the East Oakland Partnership to Reduce Juvenile Gun Violence and a sponsor of the Oakland Gun Tracing Project.
