Health outcome indicators for men, particularly minority men, in Fulton County suggest that men are at risk for illnesses from preventable causes. However, disproportionately few resources are dedicated towards addressing their health care needs. CHAMPP addresses these needs through the provision of health services and education to adult men. Educational activities include participation in health fairs and presentations on prostate health and other health issues relevant to adult men. Currently, services are only provided at one health center for two to three hours per week. Promotional materials targeting men's health have been developed. Recently, we sponsored a legislative lunch to enlighten elected officials about men's health. It was attended by several community advocates, policy makers, and health care providers. Since its inception, the program has provided clinical services to over 1,000 men and health education to hundreds more.
The Women's Health Program has provided support via a Community Advocate(CA) who performs intake functions. He, then forwards the patient to the clinical staff for physical assessments. The physician and CA represent the program at meetings, health fairs and conferences.
Screenings are available for health conditions such as prostate cancer. During the recent HIV/AIDS day celebration, the program administered digital rectal exams and prostate specific antigen blood tests to 7 men. Men with health problems that exceed the capacity of the program will be referred to partnering health care providers. Social needs are addressed via a support network inclusive of a variety of agencies.
