Creciendo Saludable is a demonstration research project conducted in Santa Ana, California. This comprehensive school based community collaborative is designed with multiple components to prevent health and behavior problems among school age Latino youth. Creciendo Saludable's multiple component design uses the Student Assistance health promotion model to address family, school, and individual behaviors of concern. The program serves over 1100 families in a high poverty predominantly Spanish speaking neighborhood. Historically, Student Assistance Programs have been implemented in middle and high schools. Creciendo Saludable is unique in that it is implemented in an elementary school that serves predominantly newly immigrated Latino families. In adapting the Student Assistance health promotion model for the target population specific implementation barriers were identified and addressed.

Learning Objectives: Participants will: 1) recognize the cultural adaptations required to implement a school based Student Assistance Program in a primarily immigrant Latino community 2) define key benchmarks in an immigrant community which lead to the acceptance and utilization of school based and community services
