Model programs addressing racial and ethnic health disparities

The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) and the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) will present findings from their collaborative project, Model Programs Addressing Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities. This project highlights innovative state and local health department programs that seek to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in health and promotes information sharing across states and localities. This project contributes towards the nation's goal of eliminating disparities in health status.

ASTHO and NACCHO surveyed state and local health department to identify model programs, policies, and practices that address racial or ethnic health disparities and are currently compiling these successful models into a single compendium of programs.

The presentation will highlight several of the model programs and will summarize common topics identified by state and local health departments and provide information about program development and evaluation. The presentation will also identify factors contributing to successful state and local programs, such as collaboration between state and local agencies. Lastly, the presentation will highlight select federal, state, local and organizational resources available to public health professionals that focus on the elimination of racial and ethnic health disparities.

At the conclusion of the session participants will be able to: „h List several model state and local health department programs that focus on reducing racial and ethnic disparities; „h Identify factors contributing to successful state and local health department programs; and „h Identify resources on programs that address racial and ethnic disparities.
